Womens Cycle Racing Association (WCRA) Championships

Report from Claire Hall

"Very windy & tough conditions greeted the riders for the WCRA road champs 2004 at Beaulieu in Hampshire, the event also incorporated the National Junior & Espoir's Women's Road Championships 2004. The race took in 6 1/2 laps of the open heathland with just a gentle climb towards the finish but the climbs were not the problem as the very strong wind made for very tough going and played the major part in the events race speed.

37 riders from a entry of 48 signed on at in Beaulieu village, once out on the first lap the first rider to attack was Abby Greenaway (Evans CRT) gaining a small gap for a couple of miles, next Kim Blythe(Team Luciano) showed her intentions with a strong attack as the race turned into a strong crosswind,Blythe has just retuned from a 2 week racing trip to Holland so was using the winds to her advantage as she had plenty of experience of 'gutter grovelling'!.Once she was pulled back a crash saw several riders down with Louise Day & Laura Bissell requiring Hospital treatment,Day suffering a broken collarbone & Bissell badly bruised arm & shoulder both were released after treatment.

Next to have a try was Julia Shaw (GS Strada) who put the race into a long line in the gutter as she rode hard for a few miles before getting pulled back. The bunch came close to another crash when several New Forest Ponies paid the event a rather to close visit and shades of Erik Zabel in Ghent Weveglem shot into the minds of many! The strong wind was wearing riders down and several tried to get away but the wind made this extremely difficult along with a active bunch pulling them back Louise Amery (Bikin Motion), Blthye, Claire Hall (Swindon RC), Rosie De Demedios(VC Meudon), Lorna Webb(Recycling.co.uk), Leda Cox (Anglia Sport) all trying in the last few laps.

The scene was set for a hard sprint into the strong wind from the left, Shaw chanced her arm with a strong attack with a Kilo to go and looked to have the race in the bag until the wind stopped her in her tracks at 300 metres out,as the bunch passed her with Webb leading out and Amy Hunt using her Cycle Cross skills to great effect taking a ride on the grass on the right for about 100 metres the at the yellow flag a coming together of several riders saw Blthye loose several spokes in her front wheel but her track skills held her upright as Webb scored a clear win along with the Espoirs title, Hunt by now on the tarmac taking 2nd and retaining her Junior Title with Cox in 3rd. These 3 took the medals in the WCRA championships. "
