MTB Downnhill, Southern Series Rounds 4 & 5, Cheddar

Report from Tony Price ;

Saturdays track started on the rocky fire road before diving into the trees, over a bridge and across a tricky rock garden before a very tricky offcamber left-hand bustop. The track weaved through the trees to big s bend before the second rock garden. A pedally bit followed that lead through some switch backs before steepening up for the last rock garden and drop or sweeping left hander that parallel devils drop. A tight right hander to step-down followed with only the last double and drops between fields before the sprint to the line.

First runs. Rob was first off and rode cleanly to record a 1:30 but this later came up as a 1:39 in the printer results (gutted). I was next off (Tony) but slip off on the roots in the big S to record a 2:21, followed by Kirsty rode really well to post a time of 1:39 good enough to second place in the women's event just 9 seconds down on Rachel Atherton.

Second runs. Rob felt slower but improved his time to 1:38 and a final position of 36 in senior men. Tony had a far better run (not falling off) for a 1:53 just under 1 second off of 8th place man Roy Parsons (EMBC) in vet men. Kirsty over cooked it on the last right hander, sliding out and loosing time but still coming in about a second up in 1:38 just a few 10th down on rob for second place in the women's race.

Day 2. Sunday's course started with the same straight but went round the bridge and in to the rock garden. The same route was followed to the big S where it went straight through a gap in the trees before a sharp left leading into a small step before a ditch. A series of bustops followed which lead into a long sweeping right-hander and over the bridge jump, then out into the sun, a couple of jumps and the big left-hand 180 berm. Back into the trees and a sharp right hander into the sweeping S's running down devils drop and the last right hand berm and bridge crossing before the same finishing complex. Another great course, a bit longer, faster and more open than yesterdays.

First runs. Rob was off first again and cleaned the first rock garden really well and flew down the rest of the course for a 1:46. A practice meant that Tony had to use Kirsty's front wheel for both his runs and run back up the hill so Kirsty could do her run 30minutes later. A stumble in the first rock garden lead to a slowish time of 2:16. Kirsty had a good clean run posting 1:48 and second place.

Second runs. Rob went faster to a time of 1:44 which could have been quicker but for stalling out in one corner (45th senior men). Tony had a far better second run if a little cautious still to post a time of 2:06 (10th vet) and a record 6 minute trek back up the hill with Kristy's wheel! Kirsty crashed out on her second run leaving it wide open for Rachel Atherton to take the win with Kirsty second and an improving 11 year old Monet Adams in third.This should be enough to give Kirsty the overall title in the Southern Down Hill Series (TBC)

A great weekends racing for all the family with a great team/family spirit with us all pulling together on Sunday to get all our runs in.

Club Hill Climb Championships, Salthrop Hill

A clash with the cyclocross race saw a change of date for the Hill Climb which was again held on Salthrop Hill. There was a slight sting in the tail for riders as they emerged from the sheltered tree lined climb into a headwind that made the last few hundred metres quite tough.

National Points Series Downhill MTB series, Wales

Report from Tony Price ;

Kirsty competed in the last round of the nationals last week end at Gryn Moelfre north Wales.

The course had a 1000ft drop and was well over a kilometre long with the start gate up in the clouds, you could see for miles when it was clear. From the trig point start, you had a small drop off of about 5ft straight into a right hand berm and the first steep straight before the first big drop. This had a very steep grassy entry with a 4 ft near vertical rock drop leading straight into a left hand off camber turn and the first section of the off camber traverse across the hill. A right hand turn lead into another near vertical rock and scree section before continuing across the hill to the steep 'S' bend covered in shale and rabbit holes. The traverse continued at high speed only interrupted by a section of large chunks of shattered rock and a few gorse bushes to dodge before levelling off a bit on the plateau where a few speed jumps were put in some tricky places. The track the wound down into the only wooded section on the course before diving down a very steep bank and into a long loose rocky right hander that caught out Peaty and Barel in practice. More off camber zig-zaged its way down to the last drop that had three routes down it, far left was a near sheer drop of 5 to 6 ft on to a steep landing (pro and nutcases only), the middle route was slightly easier and not much slower but still caused plenty of crashes, the right hand route was still quite fearsome but less likely to cause any problems, before all routes merged into a long, steep, sweeping right hand berm that caused more than a few riders to over shoot and go off course (by miles). This just left a short traverse, a couple of small jumps and the finishing beam, Wow! All this took just over 2 minutes for the pro's, what speeds were they doing??

Saturdays practice started on a blank canvass of a track, it was marked out but had not been ridden so there were no lines. As the day wore on the track rode in but the off camber still caused grip problems with riders using aggressive mud tyres (in the dry) to try to avoid sliding down the hill side ways! Unlucky Chopper crashed on the first drop on his first practice run needing a hospital visit, but the organiser forgot to arrange for someone to pick him up, so he got a cab only to be involved in a 3 car pile up in Oswestry needing another hospital visit, he got back to the campsite at 2:30am! More bad luck fell Peaty's way when he crashed his mini motocross bike racing around the campsite track and cut his leg with the foot peg needing an operation to reattach his tend to the bone and 6 weeks in plaster.

Sundays early practice was very slippery after over night rain but this dried quickly once 200 odd people rode over it ready for racing. As usual they were running late no surprise there. Kirsty found the track very difficult as some people said it was more like a world cup course that a national course, she therefore wanted to protect her second place in the overall series standings by getting in a solid and safe first run. She arrived at the finish in a time of 4:10 good enough for fifth place with Rachel Atherton (Animal/muddy Fox), an elite rider racing non-elite her in her first race back from season long injury, taking the lead with 2:50 on a track designed by her brothers.

Kirsty was now assured of second in the overall standings and could relax and try and enjoy her second run and hopefully improve her position. Rachel came into view first but crashed heavily at the bottom of the last rock drop only being able to finish after all the other girls had passed. Caroline MacKinlay rode steadily to take second place on the day and the overall series win in 3:28. Lucy Collins beat twin Anna into third place on the day a third place overall with a time of 3:39. Kirsty had a far better second run recording a 3:53 but could not improve on her fifth place on the day. Rachel's winning time would have still been good enough to have placed her 4th in the elite women's class!
