Catford CC ‘Classic’ Hill Climb,
Sunday 9th October 2011, 0.4 mile

York’s Hill, Goathurst Common, Sevenoaks, Kent

'The oldest continuing cycle race in the world'

At 10am on a damp Sunday morning, this Classic Hill Climb got under way. Early morning rain made the 0.4mile course very slippery under wheel, but when the event started the sun came out and was even warm.

This prestigious event goes back to 1887 and, with the exception of the war years, has been run ever since. Before the formation of the RTTC It was considered to be the ‘Hill Climb Championship of All England’ and still attracts the leading 'Hill-Climb' riders from all over the country. The climb of York’s Hill is 707yards with an average gradient of 12.5%, with two stretches of 25% and a height gain of 92metres. The current record of 1min 47.6 was set by Phil Mason in 1983 and has not been broken in 28 years! This is a sporting spectacle viewed by hundreds who line the route cheering on the efforts of the riders.

There were 103 entries on the line.
