Club 10 Evening Time Trial Series

The evening time trials are held on the same course each Thursday evening throughout the summer months.  Organisation for the time trials is shared between Corinium Cycling Club and Swindon Road Club.

The time trials are held under RTTC rules.  Anyone can take part as long as they are a member of a RTTC affiliated club.

Riders should register between 45 and 30 minutes before the start time.  It takes approximately 10 minutes to cycle from the HQ to the Start.  Entry fee is £2.50 for Swindon RC and Corinium CC club members and £3.50 for visitors.  The entry fee gets you a cup of tea and a biscuit after the race.

The HQ for registering and post race results is the Bradstone Sports Ground, Ashton Keynes.  A map of the course and the HQ is shown below.

The time trial course is flat with the only 'hill' being the roundabout flyover over the A419.  Course record is a low 22 minutes.

Swindon RC members are requested to help out a couple of times during the season with marshalling, time keeping, etc.

The time trial series organiser for Swindon RC is Chris Broad-Drake.  Please contact Chris if you have any queries.

Important Notes

Race entry fee 2008 Corinium CC/Swindon RC riders is £2.50 & £3.50 for visitors.

The race fee includes Coffee/Tea/Soft drink and Biscuits.

Pastries/cakes etc on separate table are available by making a separate donation.

Timekeepers will move off 15mins before start time and NO FURTHER ENTRIES ALLOWED.

Early and late season events can be affected by poor light as well as lighting up times, hence only a set number of riders will be allowed to start at Organisers/Timekeeper’s discretion.  Corinium/Swindon RC riders who know they will be late can ring Allan Norwood (01666 504075) or Chris Broad-Drake (07855 406547) in the morning/afternoon (whichever is running the evening race) and book numbers, so long as they sign on/read Risk Assessment when collecting their Race numbers.

Guest riders welcome but are not allowed to sign on until 35 minutes before start time and also subject above ruling re Timekeepers, so you have a 20 minute slot for signing on

All events are run under CTT rules, hence all ‘Other Clubs’ riders must be able to demonstrate that their Club is CTT affiliated.  Also see above re additional start rules covering visiting Club riders.

SAFETY: Both Corinium CC /Swindon RC heavily recommend the use of appropriate safety approved headgear - (Mandatory for riders 18yrs of age and under)

Please make sure you read the ‘On the day Risk Assessment’ before taking your number and note the Course Risk Assessment document is available for checking on request.

Corinium and Swindon RC members are expected to carry out specific race duties as set out by your specific Club – failure excludes you from respective Club Championships.

The Course

For 2008 the evening time trial series will continue to use the U48.  The circuit is two laps on the flat, wide and relatively quiet Latton road.

The start is about 1 mile along the unclassified road towards Driffield that runs parallel with the A419 dual carriageway.  From the start riders head south and after one mile reach the roundabout with the A419 junction.  Continue straight ahead on the unclassified road towards Latton.  Upon reaching the roundabout after Latton, return on the same road back towards the A419 roundabout.  At the roundabout return on the Latton road for the second lap of the circuit.  Repeat the circuit.  The finish line is beside the layby which is approximately 600 meters before the A419 roundabout.

Marshall Duties

The marshalling list will also be displayed at each event at the signing on desk.

On a more serious note this Club Series will only succeed if the members competing contribute to the organisation. This is YOUR club series so please make it happen.

Information for Beginners

If you are new to cycle racing then the club time trials are a great way to try competitive cycling in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Firstly you need a bike.  A normal road bike will do although the more serious riders have specialist time trial bikes with tri-bars and aero dynamic wheels (to make them go faster).  You will also see the occasional Mountain bike or tandem taking part.

To enter the event, you must register at the race HQ at least 30 minutes before the start.  You will be given a number which is pinned to your back so it is visible to the timekeeper.  The number indicates your starting position in the race.

After getting your number, you should make your way to the start area which is on the lane leading to the village of Driffield.  Allow at least 10 minutes to get from the HQ to the start.

Riders are set off at one minute intervals.  You are given a push-off at the start and then you are on your own....  The objective is to ride the course as quickly as possible without assistance from any other cyclists so drafting behind other riders is not allowed.

10 miles is a long way to cycle at a hard effort so you should judge your pace.   Avoid starting too quickly as this may leave you very tired over the last couple of miles.  Start steady and then increase your effort once you have settled into a rhythm.

Most cyclists are able to ride 10 miles in under 30 minutes and this is the first goal for beginners.  Once you have ridden a couple of events, the aim is to try and improve your best time during the season.  The super-fit cyclists will be able to ride the course in under 24 minutes.

When you cross the finish line, the time keeper will record your time.   Later at the HQ, the results sheet for that evening’s race will be displayed and you can see how you performed.

Most events attract between 40 and 50 riders, mainly from Corinium CC and Swindon RC.  Many cyclists ride several events during the season and use the time trial to improve and measure their fitness.  It can be quite demanding to cycle flat out for 10 miles and that last 2 miles along the Latton Road can feel a very long way when the legs are aching....at least there is a cup to tea to look forward to after it is all over.......
