Basingstoke Cross - 18th November 2007

Out trip down to Basingstoke was a very wet murky one just giving us a taste of what to expect. After signing on we went into the woods to watch the U12 race where Courtney, the first SRC rider, finished in 4th followed by Katie in 5th and Tom 6th. Tom did have a mechanical and his dad is now in trouble, just don’t ask Paul to put your pedals on!! To stay warm we all got the bikes sorted and did lots of warming up mainly in the woods where the weather didn’t get you to much. We soon realised that this course was very technical and very muddy, the open parkland bits consisted of a long descent with a tightening left followed by some switch backs and the most horrible assent up into the wind. To the race; we all striped off and start making our way to the start only to find it delayed by 15 minutes so back to the woods for more warm up, some found it better to run to stay warm. Eventually we started and Crispin was off very fast soon getting a 10m gap he was closely followed by Darren M and Darren C. I blew like a train up that first hill and soon found Neil on my heels with Nev not too far behind. Neil soon caught and passed me, then cleared off and Nev was still close. After a few laps I got it together and caught and passed Neil but in doing so had a few moments one of them being the near running over of Dennis the Photographer. Just after I entered the woods and got to a slight drop and right hander, all on muddy leaves, Dennis (about 15 metres ahead) was walking across the track when he slipped and fell flat on his face on the racing line how he didn’t end up with tyre marks on him I don’t know but it was very close. After 50 minutes of racing the winner was Scott Forbes of Pedal-on. Cris was 7th  Darren M with no mechanicals (as he is not riding a bike made by Hotpoint) was 9th  Darren C 15th Andy 22nd Neil 25th Jon Stump 31st and Nev in 32nd. Jon had a great race normally disliking this sort of course, he found himself getting quicker as the race went on, with Nev in view he chased and eventually caught and passed him. After the race he did tell me (in confidence) that he had really enjoyed it, (could it have been the little chat with his DS just before the race and just after his fall during the warm up !!). Rob took one look at the course and said no thanks and Mark just left his bike at home, thanks for the support though. The best support came from the picture seen here captured by one of our friends; she did help take our minds off the crap day!!

Southampton Remembrence Cross - 11th November 2007

The team of 8 seniors and 1 U/12 left Swindon in the pouring rain and heading down South to Southampton on arrival the clouds cleared leaving a blue sky and although the circuit was damp it only affected a few places with the rest of it drying out during the race. The circuit was based around last years National course and saw us having to round lots of hairpin bends which were nicely covered in leaves and a few found out how slippery they are in the wet!! Tim Dunford took off from the gun getting a gap and as usual keeping it to win. Crispin had a pants start unable to get his foot in he lost places and had to dig deep to get them back eventually finishing 11th. Darren mechanical Morrissey started really well going through the first lap in 10th but then it happened again this time a rear wheel puncture! With most of the rest of us on 10 speed he robbed an unsuspecting U/12 Harvey Lowe of his back wheel and got back into the race, by this time Andy had moved up and despite a fall on a corner he got back on a fought hard to retake the riders and finished 28th. Darren then finished in 39th just ahead of Rob who finished in 44th, behind him were Nev, Jon and Claire who were having their own private battle they changed places a number of times then Nev decided put in a spurt on and finished 47th with Jon in 49th and Claire chasing him across the line in 50th. Andrew had a good race battling with a few riders and finally finished in 57th. A great day out topped off with Coffee, Tea and cakes in the camper. There are pictures at:
